Friendly Façade

What lies beneath
the surface truths
shall bare their teeth
put out their booths
once the hook's set?
No idle threat
beguiles with smiles.

Hey! My daughter Bee has an Etsy site for “Hand sewn decorative items” – RaccoonStitches! Please check it out!

I saw the phrase “what lies beneath” in a lot of posts lately, which made me think it was a prompt, but I can’t find it if it is. So I’ll credit Christine E. Ray’s poem “What Lies Beneath?” on her wonderful site “Brave & Reckless” for being the muse.

My Unpaid Bills

While I wandered
down a dark hall
my thoughts squandered
without recall
of whence I came
and whom to blame
for this remiss

I found this prompt in a folder and decided to write something for it, especially since Christine has started reposting these blog prompts on her site. In response to the 9 October 2019 Monster, She Wrote Book Title daily writing prompt on the Brave and Reckless blog and based on the title of a short story or book “Down a Dark Hall” by Lois Duncan discussed in the book “Monster, She Wrote: The Women Who Pioneered Horror and Speculative Fiction” by Lisa Kröger.

Netflix and Chill

The space between
your thoughts and mine
was unforeseen
and yet benign
I won’t rejoice
your movie choice
but will keep still

I found this prompt in a folder and decided to write something for it. In response to the 26 September 2019 Smitten Book Challenge prompt at the Brave and Reckless blog and based on the title of the well-regarded book “The Space Between” by Michelle L. Teichman where the main character is a lesbian or a woman exploring her sexual identity.
